Mitsui Fudosan and Ochanomizu University launched the "&Gendered Innovation" project!

Mitsui Fudosan is promoting industry-academia collaboration with Ochanomizu University with the aim of creating innovations that make use of research results focusing on gender perspectives and contribute to their social implementation!
We will hold an event "Entrepreneurship Market - Experience your favorite work and lifestyle" focusing on women's lifestyle business startups within a "5 meter radius.

"What are Gendered Innovations that Make the Most of Gender Differences?

("Mitsui Fudosan") (Location: Chuo-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Shun Ueda) ("Mitsui Fudosan") is collaborating with Ochanomizu University ("Ochanomizu University"), a national university corporation, to create innovations that make use of research results focusing on gender differences and to contribute to their social implementation. The company is promoting this collaboration.

Gendered innovation is a concept that aims to create unprecedented innovations and link them to social implementation by conducting research that takes into account differences in physique and body structure and function between men and women (gender differences), as well as social and cultural differences (gender differences).

Until now, there have been many studies and initiatives from the perspective of gender equality and gender neutrality, but few studies have been conducted from the perspective of rethinking society from the viewpoint of "making the most of gender differences. We believe that research from the perspective of gender innovation will break through the unconscious biases (stereotypes) that have accumulated up to now, and lead to the development of products and services that are compatible with future society and enrich the lives of each individual. We have decided to name our activities "Mitsui Fudosan x Ochanomizu University & Gendered Innovation" in the hope that this new perspective of making the most of gender differences will take root in society.

As part of this activity, "Entrepreneurship Market - Experience the work and life you love", a women's entrepreneurship event organized by "Mitsui Fudosan x Ochanomizu University & Gendered Innovation Entrepreneurship Market Executive Committee", will be held at "Mitsui Shopping Park Urban Dock La Porte Toyosu" (Koto-ku, Tokyo) for two days on October 26 (Thu.) and 27 (Fri.). The event will be held at Mitsui Shopping Park Urban Dock Lalaport Toyosu (Koto-ku, Tokyo) for two days on October 26 (Thursday) and 27 (Friday).

Entrepreneurship among women has been on the rise in recent years, ranging from full-fledged start-ups to small businesses. Because entrepreneurship has the advantage of allowing women to work flexibly according to their own lifestyles, past research has shown that women are more likely than men to create lifestyle businesses that solve familiar problems within a "5-meter radius," such as housework and childcare. This has been shown in past research studies.

This business that emerges from a 5-meter radius from one's own perspective has the potential to create products and services that overturn conventional stereotypes by rethinking familiar issues from one's own perspective, which we believe will be utilized in our urban development in the future.

This event will provide an opportunity to hear from women who have started their own businesses from a 5-meter radius and to experience various businesses started by women who are living their own lives while doing work they love. In addition, we will hold a talk session to discuss women's entrepreneurship from a researcher's point of view and provide a place to think about entrepreneurship together by presenting the thoughts of those who support women's entrepreneurship.

What is "& Gendered Innovation"?

In February 2023, Mitsui Fudosan and Ochanomizu University concluded an "Agreement on Comprehensive Cooperation for the Promotion of Industry-Academia Collaboration" and started industry-academia collaboration with the aim of contributing to the realization of a society where women who want to work can fully demonstrate their individuality and abilities (promotion of women's activities) by utilizing the resources of both parties.

Ochanomizu University has been working on gender issues for many years, and in 2022, we will establish a new Gendered Innovation Institute to conduct research/technological development that will open up the frontiers of gender research.

The word "gender" and the word "gendered" in gendered innovation have different meanings. Gender means "the way sex is," while "gendered" has the verbal meaning of "focusing on gender differences. In other words, the major difference between "gendered" and "gender-neutral" is that "gendered" starts from the viewpoint that "gender differences are natural," in contrast to conventional discussions from the perspective of gender equality or gender neutrality.

Gender-neutral innovation is an area that requires not only research, but also practical application in the real world to solve problems. We believe that reexamining society from the perspective of making the most of gender differences will break through unconscious biases (stereotypes) that have accumulated up to now, and lead to the development of products and services that are compatible with future society and that will enrich the lives of each individual.

By teaming up with Ochanomizu University, which provides solutions and services that are close to people's lives through a wide range of businesses, including office buildings, large-scale commercial facilities, and housing projects, we will be the first to apply the results of research that takes into account gender perspectives to urban development and implement them in society.
