Shiseido invests in Chitose Group! Strategic Collaboration Agreement Signed to Establish Resource Recycling Business Model

Under its corporate mission "BEAUTY INNOVATIONS FOR A BETTER WORLD," Shiseido is committed to developing human- and earth-friendly cosmetics that maintain not only people's skin but also the natural environment healthy and beautiful. Shiseido has decided to invest 1 billion yen in the Chitose Group, which is leading the "MATSURI "*1 project to build a new sustainable industry based on algae, and to conclude a strategic collaboration agreement focusing on research and development!
Together, we will accelerate recycling-oriented manufacturing with a view to developing and mass-producing raw materials for cosmetics and cosmetic containers using algae, as well as developing raw materials that can be utilized in the food industry in the future.

Creating cosmetic ingredients and containers from algae to create a resource-recycling business model

Based on the power of the sun, algae efficiently produce a variety of organic substances such as proteins, lipids, and carbohydrates from carbon dioxide. They can be produced even in deserts and wastelands that are difficult to use for agriculture, and they boast overwhelming biomass production efficiency compared to terrestrial plants.
Shiseido will maximize the potential of these "algae" and build a recycling-oriented model that does not deplete resources and is integrated with the global system, together with the Chitose Group, to lead the creation of sustainable value that will renew the global cosmetics market.

What is "MATSURI" led by Chitose Group?

This project is led by the Chitose Group, which is strong in the large-scale production and commercialization of algae using sunlight as its sole energy source, and aims to build a sustainable new industry based on algae. Collaborating with other organizations in various positions and industries, we are simultaneously conducting multifaceted research and development of applications and large-scale production of algae in order to promote the spread of algae products that support people's lives.

In terms of large-scale algae production, we completed construction of a 0.1 ha facility in August 2018 and a 5 ha facility, CHITOSE Carbon Capture Central (C4), in April 2023, and plan to expand to 2000 ha in 2030. The current target is to expand the production scale to 100 ha by 2027. In March of this year, this project was selected for research and development by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) as a Green Innovation Fund project with a planned total amount of 50 billion yen.
