Relic and NTT DOCOMO] Commenced renewed provision of "TukTuk," a contactless unmanned store service operated jointly by Relic and NTT DOCOMO.

Relic, a business co-creation company that supports new business development and innovation creation for Japanese companies, has conducted a major renewal of its unmanned store service "Convenience Stand TukTuk," which has been planned and operated in collaboration with NTT DOCOMO. The service was launched on July 16, 2021, targeting condominiums and other residential and office facilities in the 23 wards of Tokyo and surrounding areas.

What is a "TukTuk" convenience stand?

This service is a convenience stand that enables unmanned sales by installing small showcase stores in common areas of condominiums and offices, etc. It can handle a wide range of products to meet users' needs, including foodstuffs such as boxed lunches, desserts, drinks and snacks, and daily necessities.
In addition to the ability to remotely monitor operational information such as the lock status of the key installed on the showcase door, the temperature inside the case, and images of users and refrigerators, showcase inventory replenishment is also performed by TukTuk management staff, thus achieving labor-saving and efficient operation.

In addition, dynamic pricing is applied to the prices of products for sale, and prices of products nearing their expiration date can be adjusted to reduce waste loss. In addition, the system enables a detailed understanding of usage conditions by analyzing purchasing data and user trends, making it possible to realize data-based operational improvements at this convenience stand.

By introducing the system in residential facilities such as condominiums, a livable environment can be realized, and it is expected to improve the vacancy rate and the contract rate. By introducing the system into offices and other workplaces, it is expected to improve the working environment and create more comfortable workplaces.

How to use "TukTuk

After purchasing products through the user-specific application, users of this service can receive the products by unlocking the lock of the showcase using a QR code.

Since you never have to leave the building, you can save the effort and hassle required for shopping and have a more pleasant shopping experience. It can be easily used when you are busy working remotely or when you don't have time for household chores.

In addition, users can request products they would like TukTuk to carry through the chat function of the dedicated application, allowing for an assortment of products optimized to their needs.

With this renewal, the dedicated application and product landing page have been completely redesigned. In the future, the company will also work on partnering with retailers and real estate companies, as well as improving its services and UX.

Past introduction results and users' voices

The verification experiment that began in the summer of 2020 has so far been installed in dozens of offices and share houses mainly in Tokyo, where employees and tenants are actually using the system. Companies that have introduced the system have expressed their desire to introduce it at other branches and branch offices, and to expand the system to other properties they manage.

Residents commented, "It is convenient that I can shop without leaving the house since it is located inside the share house (20s female/university student)" and "It is especially useful when I don't want to go outside or when the weather is bad. It's also nice that it accepts electronic payments, so I don't need cash (30s male/office worker).

About the background of TukTuk's development

In addition to the social issues of the shrinking market and labor shortages in Japan due to the shrinking population, the widespread impact of the spread of the new coronavirus infection continues, and Japanese companies urgently need to adapt to the changing environment in the new normal era.
In particular, there is a strong need to fundamentally rethink the way businesses and services are operated in industries that have been based on real, face-to-face contact, and to shift to new models and operating methods that meet customer demand under non-face-to-face, non-contact conditions on the Web and online.

This service will enable convenience stores and other retailers of food, beverages, and daily necessities, which until now have relied on real, face-to-face contact for their sales in manned stores, to provide a safe and convenient purchase experience in unmanned stores through the use of DOCOMO-developed Smart Stand (a showcase-type refrigerator with a smart lock, sensing, video monitoring, and other dedicated devices attached to it). ), which is a safe and convenient purchase experience in an unmanned, non-personal, contactless environment.
This allows users to shop safely in the Corona Disaster without having face-to-face contact with store clerks or other users.

This service is a product of TOPGUN, DOCOMO's new business creation program, and has been planned and operated by Relic and DOCOMO as a collaborative project from the beginning of the demonstration experiment.
