Effective utilization of unused waste cooking oil as a biomass resource
Currently, most of the waste cooking oil generated in Japan is recycled into feedstuffs and ink materials, but some is exported or disposed of without being utilized. Through this collaboration, the two companies will promote the effective use of unused waste cooking oil as a biomass resource.
Specifically, DYNAC Corporation and Izutsu Maizumi Corporation, both of which are in the restaurant business of the Suntory Group, will initially participate in the stable procurement system for waste cooking oil in Japan that ENEOS is developing with Nomura Office and Yoshikawa Oil & Fat Co. In the future, the two companies will work together to procure unused waste cooking oil from Suntory's network of approximately 80,000 food and beverage outlets, which are the customers of Suntory's alcoholic beverage products.
The waste cooking oil procured from the restaurants will be used as raw material in a sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production plant (Wakayama Refinery, 400,000 kl/year), which ENEOS is aiming to commercialize by 2026. Bio-PET bottles will be produced from the bio-naphtha obtained in the process of SAF production, and the use of bio-PET bottles as containers for Suntory's spirits products for food and beverage outlets will also be considered. This will enable Suntory to realize resource recycling through the use of its network of food and beverage outlets, from the procurement of waste cooking oil to the supply of products in bio-PET bottles.
ENEOS's long-term group vision is to achieve a carbon-neutral society through energy transitions while ensuring a stable supply of energy and materials.
As part of this effort, we are building an integrated system for the procurement of raw materials, in-house production, and sales of SAF. To secure the waste cooking oil and vegetable oil needed for SAF production in a sustainable manner, we are building a system for collecting waste cooking oil and studying inedible plants in Japan and around the world.
The Suntory Group's corporate philosophy is "We strive to create a rich lifestyle and culture that resonates with people and nature, and aims for the 'radiance of human life. Since its foundation, the Suntory Group has been striving to realize a sustainable society.
In 2019, we formulated a "Basic Plastic Policy" and are implementing various initiatives with the goal of making PET bottles "100% sustainable*" by 2030.
*Switch to 100% recycled materials or plant-derived materials, etc., and reduce the use of new fossil-derived materials to zero.
Both companies will continue to promote efforts to realize a decarbonized and recycling-oriented society through the use of waste cooking oil.
