Dawn of a New Rocket Era in Japan
The market size of the space industry is 44 trillion yen as of 2021 and is expected to reach 76 trillion yen by 2030 [1], making it one of the fastest growing markets in the world. With the spread of IoT/AI technologies, the utilization of communication, positioning, and earth observation data via satellites is expected to expand in an even wider range of fields, contributing to solving a variety of social issues in the future.
On the other hand, the satellite launch business, which forms the basis of the satellite business, faces an industry structural challenge in that there are no rockets or launch sites in Japan that are capable of low-cost, high-frequency launches.
Space One is a company that handles the entire process from development to launch of small rockets that carry satellites. The company has its own launch pad (Spaceport Kii) in Wakayama Prefecture, and plans to launch 20 rockets a year, starting with the first launch currently underway.
Under the partnership, MUFG will contribute to enhancing the business value of Space One and solving issues in the domestic space industry by providing its extensive network, knowledge and expertise in comprehensive financial services.
In addition, by participating in this project, which supports the foundation of the space industry, we aim to create a new industrial cluster by promoting collaboration with various private businesses, including satellite development companies and other space-related businesses.
MUFG accelerates space initiatives and creates new business
BTMU is committed to business co-creation, in which "we share business risks with our customers and create new industries to solve social issues". This investment is the first of a series of business co-creation investments in the space industry, and will contribute to the development of Japanese industry by promoting open innovation, including industry-government-academia collaboration, for equipment manufacturing, infrastructure construction, maintenance of a sustainable space environment, and utilization of satellite data to solve social issues in the space industry.
