Call for Collaboration Proposals] The Future Built by Soil and People. | TSUCHIYA's challenge to reform the way of working in the construction industry!

TSUCHIYA, with its roots in the civil engineering business, has four business resources, including overseas business, aviation business, and environmental business, while maintaining its domestic construction business as its mainstay. The role of TSUCHIYA is to "inherit and take on challenges. The foresight of Mr. Tomoyoshi Tsuchiya, Chairman and President, has built TSUCHIYA, which is celebrating its 70th anniversary.
Why is TSUCHIYA holding the accelerator program now, when the company has never stopped growing? What is the appeal of co-creating with TSUCHIYA for start-ups? We interviewed Mr. Ryoichi Masuda, Managing Director and Executive Officer.

Wings expanding beyond construction - Four business pillars built by TSUCHIYA

Q. What is the nature of your company's business?

TSUCHIYA is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year since 1954, when its predecessor, Tsuchiya Gumi Co.With its roots in the civil engineering business, which was responsible for infrastructure development, the company has developed its business in four areas: domestic business, overseas business, aviation business, and environmental business. The company is doing so.

01. "Domestic Business
Domestic business centered on construction sites

TSUCHIYA provides a full range of services from planning and design to construction for medical and welfare facilities, educational and cultural facilities, apartment buildings, commercial facilities, factories, and other buildings that meet diverse needs.

In addition to architecture and civil engineering, we are expanding our real estate business and are also involved in the construction consulting business, and are actively working on environmentally friendly construction toward the realization of carbon neutrality.

02. "Overseas Business
Cooperation with major companies that we have seized through overseas expansion

TSUCHIYA has been focusing on overseas markets since the early 2000s after helping clients expand their business overseas, and has been engaged in construction projects in Asia and Europe.

Currently, the company has 11 overseas offices, not only in major cities in Asia, but also in Eastern Europe, including Austria, Hungary, and Romania.

03. "Aviation Business
Convinced of the potential of business jets

Business jets allow for efficient and speedy travel.

Convinced by his own experience of the potential of business jets as a transportation tool for busy executives, President Tsuchiya acquired JAPAN AVIATION SERVICE through M&A at that time. This led to the current "aviation business" that provides handling and charter services not only in Japan but also around the world.

In the future, I would like to devise the launch of a "new business involving business jet charter and travel.

04. "Environmental Business
Contributing from the unique perspective of a general construction company

TSUCHIYA is developing various environmental projects to contribute to the SDGs and achieve carbon neutrality so that everything on earth can continue to live in good health.

In particular, in the "renewable energy business," we have many technologies and experience in the construction of photovoltaic power generation facilities, and we propose the best combination of power generation equipment and construction methods, utilizing the know-how and perspective of a general construction company with a thorough knowledge of land specifications and structures.

We also promote environmental creation through our "environmental restoration business," which conducts soil surveys and restores water and soil to a healthy state, and our "environmental consulting business," which utilizes energy-saving technologies in buildings.

Co-creating a new construction industry! What TSUCHIYA wants to achieve together with startups

Q. Could you tell us about the background of the Accelerator Program?

In today's construction sites,Declining workforce due to low birthrate and aging population, and challenges in passing on skills to the next generationis becoming more and more pronounced. In the construction industry, long working hours are the norm due to the need to meet deadlines promised to customers while managing sites that are subject to weather conditions.

On the other hand, with the fiscal year 2024 approaching when the "Workplace Reform Law," which will establish a penalized ceiling on overtime work, will be applied, there is an urgent need to somehow improve the working environment to make operations more efficient and reduce working hours.

TSUCHIYA has introduced various systems to address this difficult problem, and has promoted construction DX and confirmed their usefulness. Unfortunately, however, we have yet to reach a fundamental solution due to reasons such as the effects being temporary and lacking certainty.

So there,Startups seeking new technologies and ideas to reduce waste and overcome barriers together to build a system that compensates for labor shortages in the construction industry. We are looking for

The construction industry has a large environmental impact, and we want to reduce that impact as much as possible.

In recent years, there has been a growing movement in society to address the SDGs and to balance the environment and the economy.
Our company is also committed to passing on a beautiful and prosperous future to our children,Seeking a wide range of proposals that can accelerate TSUCHIYA's environmental business together. The company is doing so.

ーーPlease tell us about your internal reaction to this program and what you expect from the startups.

From within the company, there are far more voices of expectation than of apprehension.

As I mentioned earlier, the "way of making things" will change along with the promotion of "work style reform.
From all of you who are starting out in the construction industry, because it will be difficult to build the same thing in the same amount of time as before,Propose environmentally friendly project ideas and new technologies, methods, and ideas that can improve the efficiency of construction workI would be happy to receive the

We are also hopeful that as we work together to brush up our collaboration proposal, the harmony of our mutual relationships will be connected and open innovation collaborations will expand.

What we can do because of open innovation with TSUCHIYA

TSUCHIYA has been involved in overseas business for 20 years. What are the advantages of expanding overseas? Many opportunities to receive orders from major companies that are difficult to do business with in Japan. It is.

The fact that the company has expanded its field beyond Japan to include a wide range of overseas locations makes it an attractive resource for startups looking to expand their business globally.

We also believe that we can easily approach the wealthy, who are the main users of business jets, through our aviation business, and that we have acquired advanced know-how, such as soil contamination improvement technology, by partnering with major domestic and foreign general contractors, which is also an advantage.

We want to be a company that can take on challenges for the next generation

Please tell us about the future that TSUCHIYA hopes to achieve.

The domestic building industry may be shrinking in the near future.
However, we expect the opposite to be true: the need for repair and renovation projects to maintain what has already been built, for sustainable new urban development, and for building trades overseas will increase.

TSUCHIYA will continue toWe want to create a system to improve the efficiency of operations, mainly in the construction industry, and to compensate for the shortage of labor in the construction industry. We believe that this is the best way to achieve this goal. At the same time, we will continue to work closely with the future environment that must be protected, while at the same time, we will continue to work with the as yet unseenDeveloping new business fields that will become our fifth business pillarWe will also be actively involved in
