What is Startup Weekend?

This is a "startup experience event" where participants take advantage of the weekend to give shape to their ideas. To date, more than 7,000 events have been held worldwide, with a cumulative total of more than 500,000 participants. Participants spend 54 hours over three days, from Friday night to Sunday night, in this program to learn the methodology for giving shape to new ideas and to experience startups in real life.
This will be the fifth time the event has been held in Shizuoka City.

Why is Shizuoka Prefecture so hot for entrepreneurship right now?

Starting with the "Five-Year Startup Development Plan" formulated by the Kishida administration last year, the national government, local governments, and various companies are working together with startups to support open innovation and startups to create new businesses. In fact, the number of university-launched startups is increasing and the number of women and seniors starting their own businesses through reskilling is also notable.

In recent years, Shizuoka Prefecture has been attracting attention as the "No. 1 Prefecture to Emigrate to," thanks to Corona. In fact, local governments in Shizuoka Prefecture are promoting subsidies and grants for emigration and entrepreneurship, as well as the development of all kinds of support systems, and the number of people taking advantage of these measures to emigrate from outside the prefecture is on the rise.

Starting a business in a rural area has some advantages: the cost of living is lower than in a metropolitan area, there is less competition than in a large city, and you can have deeper connections than in a city, where the local community is less developed. In addition, the SW Shizuoka event was a great opportunity to learn from the sponsors and many well-known local companies about the high level of interest in startup support and innovation creation in rural areas.

Against this backdrop, EXPACT hopes to create opportunities for new business and innovation creation from various perspectives by collaborating with local governments and local companies through "start-up support" from Shizuoka, the place of business start-ups. Through these efforts, we hope to revitalize Shizuoka Prefecture as a whole and create employment.
