immerse×University of Miyazaki] Learning English while having fun with VR? A demonstration experiment was started for engineering students!

Associate Professor Noriko Kawasaki of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Miyazaki will conduct a VR English conversation project using the VR English conversation platform "immerse". She plans to give English conversation lessons using VR space to about 20 students of the Faculty of Engineering over a period of about 4 months and analyze their learning effects by the end of this academic year.

Overview of the demonstration experiment using VR English Conversation

To motivate engineering students, who tend to be less interested in English communication due to their dislike of English, to learn more,Test the effectiveness of introducing VR English conversation, which can be tackled like a game, to see if it can lead to an increase in motivation to learn English. The project will be carried out with the cooperation of Professor Masato Sakamoto's laboratory at the University's Faculty of Engineering. The project will be conducted with the cooperation of Professor Masato Sakamoto's laboratory at the University's Faculty of Engineering, with technical support for VR equipment operation, etc.

The university will also use this project as a basis for futureEnhance English language education using technology, a specialty of the College of EngineeringPreliminary studies are currently underway with a view to

Associate Professor Noriko Kawasaki of Miyazaki University commented]

The act of speaking is significant in improving English communication skills. However, online English conversation, which is flourishing with the Corona disaster, has only become face-to-face communication through a screen, and it is not an effective way to support English learning for Miyazaki University engineering students, who are not very good at face-to-face communication, and it has not become a means to motivate them to learn English. On the other hand,Today's Generation Z youth are highly interested in learning activities using digital devicesIt is also true that

We therefore focused on digital devices, which engineering students excel at, and introduced English conversation activities in a VR space. We thought that VR English conversation would create a mechanism for learning English in a game-like environment, and also make it easier to engage in remote English conversation, which is required for new lifestyles.By having engineering students engage in English conversation activities while giving them a sense of game playing in a VR space, we will eliminate their sense of difficulty with English and increase their motivation to learn English.and we hope that this will lead to a spillover effect on autonomous learning and actual face-to-face communication after the activity.

What is "immerse" VR English education platform?

immerse" VR English education platformis a VR English education platform that enables English conversation schools, high schools, universities, and other educational institutions to create English learning curricula and conduct lessons on virtual scenes.

The system is being introduced mainly at "English conversation schools," "online English conversation companies," and "educational institutions at high schools and universities" in Japan, North America, and Europe.Customize your school's own original lesson content on realistic VR scenes and 360-degree panoramic photosThe system enables students to take immersive VR English conversation lessons using avatars.

【【Takumi Nakahara, a fourth-year student at the School of Information Systems Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, University of Miyazaki]

I originally joined the engineering department because I was interested in new technologies and services using virtual space such as VR and AR. That is why I am excited to be involved in this project. In the course of providing technical supportLearning features that can only be experienced in VR and features that give learners an uplifting experienceand have high hopes for VR English conversation.

Also, as a student, I enjoy VR English conversation using "immerse". I would be happy if we can support the increase of various educational methods in the future and help people to choose the way of learning that suits them best. With this expectation in mind, I will do my best for the upcoming demonstration experiment. I am currently researching learning utilizing virtual spaces such as VR and AR in Professor Masato Sakamoto's laboratory, and I would like to use this experience to make my own research activities even more meaningful in the future.
