The "JR East Startup Program" has been held since fiscal 2017, and a total of 63 proposals have been adopted so far. The program has conducted demonstration experiments in a wide range of fields, including railroad business, lifestyle service business, IT and Suica business, and some of the initiatives have been put into practical use.
In order to promote further open innovation, the fourth edition of the "Smart Life" series will focus on the three themes of "regional development," "tourism/inbound tourism," and "smart life," and will promote collaboration with venture companies with an eye toward the future.
What is the "JR East Startup Program"?
In this program, venture companies and people with various ideas are invited to submit business and service proposals that utilize the management resources and information assets of stations, railroads, and group businesses, which are then brushed up and realized.
The "JR East Startup Program" won the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Award at the first Japan Open Innovation Awards in 2018, sponsored by the Cabinet Office.
Business Areas
Under the JR East Group's "TICKET TO TOMORROW - Kip of the future for all. ~the JR East Group is looking for proposals that can help solve social issues and create a prosperous and happy future together.
(1) Create services that enhance convenience by linking people, goods, and information in a timely manner
(2) Creation of comfortable travel that smoothly connects the origin to the destination
(3) Technological innovations that contribute to safer and more secure transportation and improved services
(4) Create stations as places where diverse people from Japan and abroad can gather and enjoy themselves through the provision of attractive services.
(5) Promote local employment, migration, and tourism
(6) Resolving social issues such as energy with less environmental impact and safe and stable food supply
Target companies to be recruited
The goal is to conduct demonstration experiments by the end of the fiscal year, targeting companies that have their own products, services, or prototypes and have been in business for approximately 10 years or less.
Subjects to be solicited
(1) "Regional Development
Promotion of "regional development" in the Tohoku area and other regions marking the 10th anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake
(2) "Tourism and Inbound
Creation of "tourism and inbound" projects such as revitalization of tourism resources and creation of local attractions from new perspectives
(3) "Smart Life
Realization of "Smart Life" as a proposal for new ways of working and living, such as responding to social needs such as telework and dual life, and new consumer behavior through digital transformation

1 Subject of recruitment
Companies that already have their own products, services or prototypes
Companies that have been in business for less than 10 years and can conduct a demonstration experiment by the end of the fiscal year
2 Application Requirements
Proposals must be novel.
To utilize the resources and assets of the JR East Group.
The project must lead to new business development for the applicant and the JR East Group.

December - A demonstration experiment is conducted using JR East Group's resource assets.

6 Details of support
During the acceleration period, the project will have access to information, IT tools, promotional facilities, and commercial and logistics networks owned by the JR East Group. In addition, a mentor will be assigned to each business proposal to support the realization of demonstration experiments and collaborative plans.
